A group of researchers at Altimeter Group have identified disruptive technologies and trends that will build future digital economies. The group identified over 30 disruptions and 15 trends, which  will affect consumers, business, government, the global economy; with accelerating speed, frequency and impact.

Disruptive Technologies And Trends

Altimeter Group has  identified  about 30 disruptive technologies that will be having a disruptive impact on business. It includes things like haptic surfaces, 3-D printing, bio-engineering and even human piloted drones.

In addition, Altimeter recommends 15 trends that business leaders  should keep a close watch on. Big data, Internet of things, and quantified self (human API) are some of the trends

Four Major Themes

Out of these disruptions and trends, Altimeter identified four major themes that will be disruptive to business.

Find below a preview of Altimeter’s four business disruption themes:

  1. Everything Digital
  2. Me-cosystem
  3. Digital Economies
  4. Dynamic Organization

Everything Digital is the most important disruptive trends which forms the backdrop of the next three trends which include Me-cosystem, Digital Economies and Dynamic Organization.

Combination of Data, devices, platforms and experiences will evolve into an ecosystem that will be known as Everything Digital. Experienced by people and business, Everything Digital will not only include networked censors and objects, but capabilities such as airborne power grids will be the major component of this ecosystem.

Second theme identified by Altimeter is Me-cosystem. This organic user interface will comprise Wearable devices, near-field communications, or gesture-based recognition and many more technologies. Giving up personal data will be a small price to pay to get something as special as contextualized digital experiences.

Contextualized digital experience? Yes you have heard it right. New screen types, and virtual or augmented reality will make contextualized digital experience possible.

Do-it-yourself technologies such as 3D printing and replicators will create Digital Economies where production, distribution, and consumption will be digitally democratized. In digital economies, traditional roles and relationships between buyers, sellers, and marketplaces will be disrupted by open source, social, and mobile platforms. Consumers will connect with each other and will be the direct participants in production and distribution.

Dynamic Organization is the last trend. In today’s digital landscape, dynamic organizations must develop new business models and ways of working to remain relevant, and viable. To succeed in a new business environment, dynamic organizations must cultivate a culture, mindset, and infrastructure that enable flexibility and adaptability.
